Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the second oldest house in Port Elizabeth and protected by the Bayworld museum! It ws built by an irish clergyman, the Reverend Francis McCleland, who bought the land it stands on for three pounds 3 shillings in november 1827, on condition that he build "a good and substantial house" within 18 months within the date of purchase.

Yellowwood and local sandstone were generously used in its construction, and fabric of No 7 has stood up remarkably well to the ravages of time and weather. Little alteration was needed when the last private owner, Mr HB Smith, died in 1962 and the house was renovated for use as a museum. The house has been decorated and furnished to present the picture of 19th century domestic life in Port Elizabeth. The collection of furniture and domestic objects displayed in No 7 reflects a thriving mid Victorian community, whos members had progressed well beyond their pioneer beginnings and who had put down roots, surrounded themselves with possessions, and "aquired a style of permanence". The exhibits are mostly of English origin, from period 1850 to 1870, for example embroided cloth with fish scales! Opening times: Monday to Fridays 10am to 4pm, with lunch breaks 1-2pm. Closed on weekends and public holidays. A small entrance fee is charged just to help keep the place maintained. Children R5 and Adults R10. Contact nr. 041 5822515
