Geocache Description:

The topography in South Limburg has been created by the active fault-lines in and around the town of Sittard. The raised area has been eroded by the rivers, which have cut deep valleys which are a feature of the Limburgs landscape. If you look at the hills from a higher vantage point you can see that they are flat topped and are all about the same height. Between these hills flow the Geul, Gulp and Jeker rivers. The area north of Sittard was not raised and the material eroded from between the hills has been deposited here forming a flat area. You can see this best if you travel on the A2 motorway between Eindhoven and Maastricht. North of the turn-off for Sittard/Born the landscape is flat and to the south the landscape is hilly. 1. How high is the hill created by the fault? 2. How long has the fault been inactive? Send your answers via the profile, and, after confirmation you can add your log with a picture of yourself in front of the geological monument. Be careful, this is a very busy road Parking at N51° 00.440 E5° 50.780
