Geocache Description:

This Maiden’s Mystery will require you to carry out some detective work! The co-ordinates on the website will lead you to a clue, solve the clue and you will get the co-ordinates of the cache location. This cache is inspired by ‘Buy it in Budworth’ GCN32Q The hunt for this cache will take you close to the parish church of Minsterley – Holy Trinity. It is well worth having a look inside this unusual building, which is home to a very rare collection of Maiden’s garlands. These garlands date back to the 18th Century and placed on the graves of unmarried women who died in the village – the one shown below (next to the reproduction) is one of several original garlands hanging in the church.

If you look closely you will be able to make out some of the colours in the original garlands. The garlands were/are made of paper and wood, and were decorated with flowers and – importantly – a pair of paper gloves hanging within. These gloves were symbolic of the villagers’ defence of their maiden’s virtue – even after death; their place in the funeral service was a sort of challenge to see off anyone who might question the virtue of the dead maiden. Once you have solved the clue, the hunt for the cache will take you on a short but very pleasant walk. The cache contains details of how to carry on the walk to make a round trip – if you do this you will walk over a field which is believed to be the site of the original Minster – hence the village’s name – Minsterley. The walk is flat but may be muddy – easy enough to do with small children, but probably not much good for buggies. The cache is a small box in a camo bag. Have fun – there is a small reward for the first to find!
