Geocache Description:

Located South of Kuna Idaho off of Kuna Cave Road.

Kuna Cave is an underground lava tube cave found south of Kuna, Idaho. There is currently one entrance to the cave. It is an opening into the ground with a ladder leading down into the cave. The caves are about 50 feet deep and run about a quarter mile north and south from the entrance.

It is called Kuna Caves despite being only a single cave system. Though according to local legend, at one time the system had been much larger and was composed of multiple caves--even stretching all the way to the Snake River--before the Army Corps of Engineers blocked it off for safety. The short road leading to the cave is unmaintained, often very muddy, and the cave itself can be littered with trash and graffiti from teen-age parties. So cache in trash out if you have the opportunity. The interior temperature of the cave hovers around 56 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Like all underground caves, the available light drops off dramatically with distance from the entrance. Dare you to turn off your light when you are in the back of the cave and see how dark it really is.

One local legend has it that in the 1880’s, a lone bandit held up a stage on its way to Boise. He got away with a strongbox containing $40,000 in gold coins consigned to a bank in Boise. The outlaw tied his lariat to the chest and dragged it behind his horse during his getaway. Lawmen had no trouble following the bandit using the marks left by the strongbox as a guide. They trailed him to Kuna Cave and when they entered the cave, found the empty strongbox. Since it was dark, the posse blocked the entrance and waited for daylight. They were about to enter the cave to flush out the outlaw when they discovered another entrance to the cave and the outlaw making his escape. The posse opened fire, killing the man. No gold was found on him, nor inside the cavern and the contents of the strongbox are believed to still be hidden somewhere in the cave.

This cache is in a large plastic container that is painted black. At the bottom of the ladder take about 140 steps to the north and look for the cache under the rocks against the left side cave wall.

I will also give you credit if you are able to locate the real cash treasure from the stagecoach robbery.

Take a good flashlight and check your fear at the cave entrance if you are scared of the dark, heights or confined spaces. The cave is dirty so wear appropriate clothing. Be safe and take a someone with you.

Have fun as this is a neat geologic spot. I have taken the family car to this place in dry weather with no problems and had all my kids accompany me down the ladder into the cave.

Make sure to re-hide the cache well so it doesn't get muggled.
