Geocache Description:

The above co-ordinates take you to the parking area for the viewing of the gracious old ladys "Lebombo" and “Maluti"

On 19 August 2006 South African Airways’ (SAA) oldest Jumbo aircraft, Lebombo was relocated to its final resting place at the SAA Museum Society, located at the Transvaal Aviation Club at Rand Airport in Germiston . The aircraft, which was retired from the airline’s service in January 2004, was temporarily parked in front of the Rand Airport terminal building in Germiston after being donated by SAA to the Museum. The ground where it stands had to be reinforced, making it strong enough to hold the weight of the aircraft.

Lebombo now finally takes centre stage near the Museum’s display hall and the Transvaal Aviation Club, where visitors are invited to come and view it, and other aviation memorabilia and exhibits.

Lebombo was SAA’s very first jumbo and joined the airline on 6 November 1971 after arriving in Johannesburg from London. During its 32 years of loyal service with SAA, Lebombo completed 107 000 flying hours and 20 291 landings. Its arrival in South Africa meant great changes and technological advancements for SAA. It marked the beginning of today’s popular in-flight entertainment with pull-down screens and for the first time, crew had to work with bars on trolleys. Special thanks goes to all SAA staff who have made the SAA Museum a passion of theirs and to all who donated and worked tirelessly to ensure the final area was prepared for the arrival of the aircraft.

In September 2006 the gracious old lady “Maluti” that has served South African Airways well for over 26 years was wished farewell en route to her new home at the SAA Museum Society, located at the Transvaal Aviation Club at Rand Airport in Germiston .

This is the second of SAA’s Boeings, a 747SP (Special Performance), to find a new home at the SAA Museum Society.

The Maluti is one of only 45 B747 SPs built worldwide. She is also the first and so far only B747SP to be preserved in a museum world wide. Only 14 of these aircraft are left in service worldwide. It is shorter than the big 747, measuring 50 metres in length as opposed to 70. It was designed to fly higher and faster than the big Jumbo.

Like the Lebombo, the Maluti is in pristine condition and fully serviceable and will make a valuable contribution for many years to come.

For more information about the SAA Museum Society please visit the society's web site at www.saamuseum.co.za
