One of a series of caches in and around the Potteries. The series is based around people, places, historic events, and geographical or botanical features.
Park in the layby on the A519, at the beginning of the footpath, 1 mile from junction 15 of the M6 N52° 57.423 W002° 13.206. Head over the footbridge and follow the path.
The king refers to the tree known as the king of the forest, often thought of as the most English of trees. Through the centuries the oak has been revered by druids, and has sheltered kings, today its hard wood is often used for furniture, but in days gone by it was used in buildings, especially churches, and for ships. If you plant a sapling in your youth, you will be lucky if you see it produce its first fruit when you reach your three score years and ten.
The general cache location is on the edge of King's Wood which is predominently oak, giving way to pine as you head northwest.
The cache is hidden very close to a well-used path, so please be stealthy. GPS coverage isn't brilliant, hence the difficulty rating. You are looking for a small decon container, please don't over-fill it if there is a danger the lid won't go back on, and try to leave the container upright to stop the rain getting in. There is a small pin badge for the FTF.
If you go from this cache to Banana Tree (GCXG6D), look out for a huge oak tree at N52° 27.668 W002° 12.901. Did I say look out for it? You can't really miss it, as its just off the main path. As far as I know this is the largest oak in the wood. Perhaps someone who knows about trees can tell me its age?
