Geocache Description:

The coordinate is to the entrance of the canyon where the mileages begin. This is drive through Nine Mile Canyon outside of Price, UT. It is the most concentrated collection of Rock Art yet discovered. The difficulty rating is due to the need for binoculars to view all of the Petroglyphs and the dirt road to get there. (potentially impassible in winter)

The purpose of this cache is to give others an opportunity to explore the ancient rock art in Nine Mile Canyon and raise awareness of their plight. Not many people know about it but I had such a good time exploring this canyon I had to share it. We spent 3 hours here and we didn't even get half way through. We didn't have binoculars so we missed a lot. This cache should be done by motor vehicle but an open aired vehicle works best. The coordinate below is the location of the Chevron station where you used to be able to buy the guide book "A Guide to Rock Art in Nine Mile Canyon" by Mary and Jim Liddiard. It is no longer available. The coordinates to the station are (N 39 32.558 W110 41.308) With no guide book of any kind you will only be able to find about 5% of the glyphs. See the log by GPS Tracks for more details. According to user GPSTracks its 27 to the first petroglyph. Cameras and binoculars are highly recommended since most of the petroglyphs are only viewable from the road. Many cannot be seen with the naked eye so binoculars will help to see those located on high cliffs above the road. Of course, when the petroglyphs were made the road didn't exist. Don't blame the indians for not putting them in plain view from a car! There is very little hiking involved and that's good because most are located on private property. The orange markers and signs on each side of the road are evidence enough of that. Some glyphs are at road level and you can walk right up to them. DO NOT TOUCH! It is a Federal Offense to touch or deface them in any way. (Acid on fingers can erode and discolor rock very quickly). Before the petroglyphs were protected by the antiquities act many of the pioneers shot at or defaced them with other carvings. You must resist the urge to do the same. You are encouraged to take pictures. For more information on the people who made the glyphs, visit the College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum/Natural History up the road in Price.

To claim this cache you must take a picture of yourself in front of one of the panels of petroglyphs you see at road level and upload it to this page. Please do not trespass to get the photo. There are several locations that are only a few yards off the road you can walk to. I have the guidebook and I can tell which ones by the pictures in it. Have fun and again, PLEASE DON'T TOUCH the petroglyphs!

UPDATE!!!
Thanks Admin for fixing the nonsensical coordiantes!!!
Recently a very exciting revelation of a canyon containing exceptionally well preserved villages thought to have been inhabited by the Freemont indians was made. It is considered to be the most spectacular archeological find in the West to date! You can now do tours and pay for a day of exploring in this canyon. An amazing opportunity to play Indiana Jones!

NEW FEATURES FOUND!!! Thanks to Desertdwellerz

- The "Santa Clause" panel is at
39°47.060'N 110°8.735'W It is on the road that splits off Cottonwood at the bridge, can be viewed better from the cottonwood road by the cattlegaurd to the south and you will need field glasses. You can see it from the WP and it is straight up.

- The second WP is of an indian tower found up there. It is just below the red cattle gaurd. 39°47.533'N 110°12.401'W. This wp is on the road, You can see the tower with field glasses by looking to the south and west. It is on a large rock that looks pretty flat and about 100 foot above the road.
You have to look for it, but once you see it, you will not miss it again. It looks like it is about 20 foot or so high, but was larger.

- The red gate by this is also a place to stop and look north. There is a large pannel towards the top of the mountain right north of it. Also, there is a grainery to the east on top of a large dark brown rock, or at least there was. I could not see it last year but it was there before. Up above the Santa pannel about a tenth of a mile, you look across the canyon to the north, and there is a green line of clay in the cliff about 1/2 way up and if you look at it close with a spotting scope or field glasses, you will see two graineries there.

- Up the cotton wood canyon by a speed limit sign, not sure exactly how far, but it is above a cattle gaurd by an old cattle yard, there is a grainery there on the east side about 80 feet above you and you can see it without any help. It is sitting right in full veiw.Aprox coord's are 39°46.232'N 110°8.041'W.
