Geocache Description:

I have changed this cache to a traditional cache, at the exact coordinates that have always been posted. Oddly enough, they seem to be for a spot up the road from the ranger station, so I went ahead and hid this cache there.

This cache was posted years ago, as shown below. Since then, a whole lot of rules have crept in and made caching almost unrecognizable. Basically, if you visit the ranger station and sign the register, consider it logged. Even if you are unable to sign the register, feel free to log the find. I would love it if everyone took photos and posted them here, but it's not required. You will notice that I have never deleted any "non-qualifying" logs from this cache page. I just wanted to share the area with others. OLD LOGGING REQUIREMENTS: no longer applicable In order to log this cache, you must:

1.Visit the Kane Gulch Ranger Station and/or trailhead.
2. Obtain any necessary permit(s) for your activity. (There is a $2 fee for day hiking in the canyons, $8 for overnight in the canyons, and camping on the Mesa top is free.
3. Search the Cedar Mesa for Anasazi Ruins, Rock Art, Artifacts, or other evidence of this ancient civilization. (Don't worry, there's plenty)
4. Take pictures of what you find, and post them here.
5. Be VERY careful in the areas around the ruins and rock art and other archaeological sites.

I had posted the coordinates of an outstanding ruin, but decided that might not be the best idea. Besides spoiling it for others, (it's lots more fun to find them yourself) I was concerned that too many people might visit and damage the site. This is a twist on that idea. There are many (hundreds) of sites in this area, some are easy as pie to get to, and others are very difficult. A few have signs on the highway, so if you want to go that route, that is fine. The purpose of this cache is to showcase the fantastic geology and history of this area. You DO NOT have to go to the ruin to log this cache. If you can see the site and take a picture of it, that is good enough. I would prefer that you didn't go near the ruins, but I know how likely it is that will happen. All I ask is that you avoid touching the rock art or leaning or standing on the walls of the ruins. Resist the urge to enter dwellings and kivas. If you see any artifacts or potsherds, leave them where they are. Take a picture and post it here.
