Everytime I've been to Moab to do some mountain biking, I ride the famous slick rock trail. Not until today did I ride a less known trail (but growing in popularity), the Porcupine Rim trail.
The Porcupine Rim Trail begins on the Sand Flats Road, reached by turning left off Moab's main drag onto 300 South, then right when the road ends, then second left. From the entry gate, drive 7 miles. The trailhead is on the left, near the small cattle-watering tanks. (Leave your shuttle car in Moab, or at the Negro Bill Canyon parking area on highway 128 north of Moab.)
When you get to the top (about 3 miles of uphill climbing) and you're up on the Rim, make sure and turn on your GPS and find the virtual cache. It's a beautiful view and a beautiful trail!
The trail keeps going for another 8 miles or so. I highly recommend that you finish it out. It's all down hill from there and awesome! The trail takes you down to the Colorado River where hopefully you have a car parked and waiting. If not, don't fear! You can turn this ride into a 34 mile roundtrip loop by riding back up to your car through town and back up on the dirt road past all the campgrounds. And believe me, there are plenty of people who do it!
